THE STRATEGY OF BASIC PLAY

To most blackjack players, blackjack is a guessing game; every hand they get is a guess with them. Sometimes they will hit 15 when the dealer has a large card up, sometimes they will stand. Sometimes they will double down on eleven sometimes they will not. The average player has never read a book about blackjack and has no idea how to play the hands correctly. The average player will not hit 16 when the dealer has a large card up, but if you will notice he/she will almost always hit 12 — 14 when the dealer has a small card up. Almost every time that the average player gets a pair, he/she will split them without even looking to see what the dealer has for an up card.

I cannot emphasize enough that a basic playing strategy is a must for both casual and serious blackjack players. This is the strategy that the player must use to make the decisions of the play of each hand. These decisions, in the order in which they are made, are split, double down, hit, and stand.

Very simply, the purpose of this strategy is to learn how to play each hand the right way—percentage wise.

You must learn the basic strategy first, because even as a card counter, you will continue to play the basic strategy 75% of the time.

By playing the basic strategy religiously, you’re playing an almost even game rather than one where the odds are definitely against you.

BASIC STRATEGY

It is important that you get to thinking in this way for the other strategies.

To beat the house you must understand that the dealer will win the majority of the hands. This is guaranteed by the fact that the dealer is always last to play. To win at blackjack you must win more money on fewer hands. Two Wins Are More Profitable Than Five Wins

This is very intriguing.  There is a mathematical basis for making such a statement.  Let’s first assume using the four inside numbers (5,6,8,9), each with the minimum wager ($22 total), and have two wins so far. At the point of the second win, the profit for this shooter is two times $7 or $14. 

If we now remove our four inside wagers, our $14 profit for this shooter is clearly protected.  Let’s project into the future what would happen if we permitted our $22 investment to remain as we go for broke:

This projection should help us take a positive posture.  The most serious decision a CRAP player has, is when he should completely remove his bets.

This is clearly the only decision our income earner can make if the goal is to become a consistent winner.

Going for three additional wins (total of five), and then the 7 is rolled reduces the  $14 profit to $13.  This is just one more reason why there are less than 1% winners at the craps tables.

Hedge Bets In Roulette? ABSOLUTELY

HEDGE BETS

Hedge bets are most useful when you have a large bet on the line, and don’t want to risk losing it to a longshot fluke that could be easily covered with a small bet.

Example:  You’re playing a $300 bet on red at the Roulette table, and the zeroes have burned your butt too many times.  So you put $25 on the courtesy bar.  Now, you’ve protected your primary bet against a zeroes-induced loss, and given yourself two more ways to win. The hedge returns $425 (17-1 you split them), giving you a $125 profit after deducting the $300 (primary-bet) loss.

When playing progressions, wait until your bet is at least $50 before activating hedge bets.
